SCAM ALERT
The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office has had numerous reports from citizens receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be with the Sheriff's Office. The caller is informing people they will be arrested if they don't pay a fine or post a bond, then they direct the person to pay by an unconventional means such as with gift cards, depositing money into a cryptocurrency account, or meeting them at a location other than the Sheriff's Office. We will never ask you to pay a fine or bond in this manner, nor will we ask for any personal information over the phone.
Some of the callers have been able to set their Caller ID up to read "Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office" so it may look legitimate. If you receive a call such as this, we recommend you end the phone call, then call us at 319-291-2587 or come to the Sheriff's Office at 225 E. 6th Street, Waterloo. If there is a legitimate issue, we will help you address it.
According to Sheriff Nathan Neff, "If something doesn't seem quite right, there's a good chance it isn't. If you receive a call from the Sheriff's Office for a legitimate purpose, we won't be offended if you confirm it's us. We would rather you do this than see you fall victim to a scam artist who is trying to prey on you!"
