Youth-Led Suicide Prevention Training: Join the Movement to Save Lives
The Waterloo Youth City Council (WYCC) is taking action to support mental health and prevent suicide in our community. In partnership with Alive and Running, MercyOne, UnityPoint Health, and Black Hawk County Public Health, WYCC is leading a free, youth-led QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) suicide prevention training—and everyone age 14 and older is invited!
Event Details:
Waterloo Center for the Arts
225 Commercial St., Waterloo, IA
February 28, 2025 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM (Lunch Provided)
Open to anyone 14+ RSVP by February 18, 2025 at this link
QPR is a nationally recognized training that teaches people how to recognize the warning signs of suicide and take action. But this isn’t just any training—it’s been adapted by WYCC members to reflect the experiences of local youth, making it more relatable and impactful for teens and community leaders alike.
Why You Should Be There:
• Learn life-saving skills just like CPR but for mental health.
• Engage in hands-on activities led by local high school students.
• Connect with community leaders who care about youth mental health.
• Get free resources on mental health and suicide prevention.
• Enjoy a free lunch while making a difference!
“QPR training is something we do every year, but we wanted to make it more personal by including real conversations from our peers,” said Ben Ritter, Waterloo Youth City Council Mayor. “We all have a role to play in preventing suicide, and we hope young people and community leaders alike will show up to learn how they can help.”
Ryan Nesbit of Alive and Running Iowa will co-facilitate the training alongside WYCC members. “I can’t tell you how excited I am to see youth leading this initiative,” said Nesbit. “People learn best from their peers, and when you combine youth voices with a training proven to prevent suicide, real change happens.”
Suicide prevention starts with awareness, education, and action. Will you step up and be part of the movement? Join us on February 28 to learn how you can make a difference!
