Black Hawk County, IOWA – The inaugural “Name a BHC Snowplow Contest” winners had the opportunity to meet their newly named snowplows for the first time on Friday. (see photos below)
Each of the named snowplows has been assigned a specific route:
- Scoop Dogg will cover a 15-mile route (name submitted by Aaron Reinke)
- Alice Scooper will cover a 16-mile route (name submitted by Lori Klingfus)
- Darth Blader will cover a 17-mile route (name submitted by Annie Kappelman)

The Black Hawk County Road Department operates 16 plow trucks for paved roads and 9 motor graders for gravel roads. During snow and ice removal, regular operating hours are 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. However, drivers may be pulled from routes if visibility or road conditions become unsafe.
Winter Safety Reminder:
Whether a snowplow is named or unnamed, drivers should always exercise caution around these vehicles. Allow extra space, assume the driver cannot see you, and never pass a snowplow on the right.

Name a Snowplow Contest Recap
The inaugural "Name a Snowplow" contest garnered an overwhelming response from the public, with 200 creative submissions and over 1,500 votes cast to select the winners from a list of 15 finalists. Contest Winners were announced in December. The full voting results are available on the Black Hawk County website.
