Black Hawk County, IA – Black Hawk County celebrated the swearing-in of new and returning elected officials in late December, marking the start of their service in the New Year.

Justin Brandt was sworn in on December 20, joining returning members Chris Schwartz and Linda Laylin on the Board of Supervisors. Schwartz and Laylin took their oaths of office on December 30. Schwartz will be serving his 3rd term as County Supervisor, and Laylin begins her 4th term.

In addition, Karen Showalter was sworn in for her first term as County Auditor and Nate Neff for his first term as County Sheriff, both on December 30.

This transition comes as the county bids farewell to several long-serving officials who have made a lasting impact on Black Hawk County. Supervisor Tom Little retires after two decades of service on the Board, Sheriff Tony Thompson steps down following 16 years in his role and 31 years of dedication to the county, and Grant Veeder concludes his 36-year tenure as Auditor, having served the county for an impressive 43 years.

Black Hawk County is also preparing for a special election on January 28 to fill the seat left vacant by Supervisor Dan Trelka, who resigned after relocating out of state. Information regarding that election can be found on the Black Hawk County Election website.

Photos from the swearing-in ceremonies and of retiring elected officials are available for download on the Black Hawk County website.
