Black Hawk County Conservation staff welcomes Brianna Hull, Northeast Iowa Field Coordinator at Trees Forever, for the next two 2nd Sunday Speaker events, each at 2:00 PM at Hartman Reserve. The events are free and there is no registration required.
On July 14, Bri will teach attendees how to determine when different native species are in seed, how to identify them easily, and best practices when collecting seed.
On August 11, Bri will discuss the history of scientific artwork, how Iowa’s own Ada Hayden was a huge figure in identifying native prairie species through her observational drawings, and how drawing native species may help you learn to identify native plants.
Bri worked for two years with the Tallgrass Prairie Center in Cedar Falls. While there, she learned how to identify prairie species, harvest native seeds, and she was able to visit countless remnant prairies. Bri learned to identify species through existing artwork and her drawings. For a Green Iowa AmeriCorps project, she created a free prairie coloring book that is still available.
The main entrance for Hartman Reserve is at 657 Reserve Dr. in Cedar Falls. Currently, there is road construction on Timber Drive so attendees will need to approach the entrance from the west via Edwards Avenue. The 2nd Sunday Speaker Series usually occurs on the 2nd Sunday of each month. Speakers present on topics related to nature and our environment. If you or someone you know would like to be a presenter for this series, please call 319-277-2187.
